Visiting Gay Friendly Puerto Rico

Live Your Own 5-Star Vacation Story in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico has often been called the gay center of the Caribbean as it is the most gay-friendly Caribbean island. You will find a host of accommodations, restaurants, clubs and bars that cater to the gay clientele.

Most of the LGBT infrastructure can be found in the Old City of San Juan. This beautiful walled city still preserves its stunning colonial architecture, ranging from fortresses to colorful buildings; many declared Society Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

A great way to travel out and explore Aged San Juan is by bike.  We recommend Rent The Bicycle, a tour company specializing in everything from guided tours to hourly bike rentals.

All bike tours are by reservation and offered twice a day, and, if interested, Rent The Bicycle, will even customize a tour for you!

After all that exploring you will wish to wind down with some retail therapy!

No matter where you are on the island, you will be sure to detect a shopping mall within reach. There are over 20 shopping malls, including the largest one in the Caribbean, The Mall of San Juan.

There are also unique shopping districts, from lu

Visiting San Juan’s gay nightlife

My first night out in San Juan certainly wasn’t what I was expecting. I’d only arrived in Puerto Rico a few hours before—just enough time to dip my feet into the Caribbean and amble barefoot on the beach.

Back at my gay-owned guesthouse, I got some recommendations for a night out. First stop was Calle Loiza—a long stretch of road in the Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan. Multiple people had described the area to me as a “hipster neighborhood,” so I was excited to explore.

Along Calle Loiza, I found the typical trappings of any American travel destination. But, this is Puerto Rico, so things were also a bit… different. In a good way! Fast-food restaurants, a bar with salsa dancing, a lane food market. Plenty of Puerto Rican restaurants with all of the local specialties. There were several international cuisines on provide, too. Gay Guide to Bars and Clubs in San Juan, Puerto Rico

LIST OF Lgbtq+ BARS IN SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

We have the bars and clubs broken down by neighborhood areas, as there is not anyone “gayborhood” in San Juan.  We highly encourage getting around to view the variety of bars and clubs.

CLOSEST TO COQUI DEL MAR gay hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico:

HATO REY:  This area has more local bars and tends to be a younger crowd.  Thursdays, aka, college night, is especially popular.  Amigos del Jangeo, El Cojo, Pal Frente and the newest, Meet Macarena, are all next door to eachother.

Amigos del angueo: Local lgbtq+ bar on the strip of gay bars with dance area and pool table

Atrévete bar and cafe is more women/ sapphic focused, but welcomes all.  The owners frequently host local queer artists and musicians.

El Cojo: Local male lover bar and small homosexual dance club on the strip of local bars.

Meet Macarena:  The newest LGBTQ hot spot/ gay block, a hybrid bar with swimming pool, jazz nights and dancing.  And just across from El Cojo.

Pal Frente:   Local gay exclude on the strip of local bars.

La Cantina: Local gay Karaoke bar and restaurant.  Reasonable prices.  Laid back.
