Sly Bar in the Marais
Post by Frank Cierpial
In the year , two men were at the right place at the right time. It happened at a bar in “Le Marais”, which is the notorious gay district of Paris. I don’t grasp what sparked it. But on that night, on a tiny dot on the globe, two men fell in love. I had the great pleasure of meeting these two men a little under a year ago at a bar called “Sly Bar”. It is their bar. Their names are Sylvain and Messias and they have been together for six years.
After years of experience in the business world, they decided to make a enormous commitment together; they decided to open a lgbtq+ bar. But, this block is different than other gay bars that I have been to in Paris, Rome, Florence, Montreal, and New York. The difference is impossible to explain, you have to see it and undergo it. The gay collective, due to years of oppression is plagued with superficiality, which till this day, plagues its members. Gay bars have been a place to hire hot waiters who yearn to feel superior to the normal gay, and it becomes more prefer a fashion show than a bar. Not here, SLY Bar is heaven. It is a place where you can include fun, let go, neglect your troubles and appreciate the world.

The Cox opened in It is situated right in the heart of the Marais, on one of the Parisian male lover quarter's most bustling streets. The Cox remains one of the busiest and most famous bars in Paris. Its packed outdoor terrace is legendary and the daily Happy Hour has become a Marais institution. Every day, resident DJs mix up eclectic House sets, and the bar's themed décor is completely refurbished every three months - making the Cox one of the most dynamic bars in the area. They just celebrates their 20 th anniversary and plan to stay there for lengthy as they claim " Rouge Toujours " ( their window is red, symbol of the french resistance ) very working from 7 pm to 10 pm.
Paris is a European capital for all things same-sex attracted and fabulous, from extravagant local personalities to a neighborhood teeming with addresses for a night of cavorting. The Marais, centrally-located just north of the Hôtel de Ville and south of the Place de la République, is the epicentre for nightlife catering to boys and men of all walks, but it’s just the beginning. Starting an evening in or around the Marais is the optimal way to find out from the locals what’s going on in other gay bars around town. Whether you’re looking to share casual drinks, gyrate until dawn, or possess a brush with a local Parisian, there’s amusing to be had any night of the week.
Been there, done that? Believe again, my friend.
