Raleigh's LGBTQIA+ Historic Places: Narrowing It Down
Phase I of this project created of a preliminary roster of Raleigh’s LGBTQIA+ historic places. Now, Phase II of this project will take a closer look at 20 of these existing places. The evaluation will comprise a short site history and a current photo. Our team will estimate each site’s historic significance within the context of Raleigh’s larger LGBTQIA+ community.
We are seeking the community’s input on which of these historic sites should get a closer see. We want to recognize which places on the list are most crucial to the larger LGBTQIA+ community. Which places are you curious to realize more about? Where would you like to view the project’s limited resources focused?

Nash Square was a famous cruising spot (a place for gay or attracted to both genders men to meet other men for trysts) in the 20th century prior to and throughout lgbtq+ liberation.
Several places have been identified as cruising spots in the middle of the 20th century, including certain stretches of Hillsborough, Fayetteville, and W. Hargett Streets. Cruising also took place in public restrooms in the Sir Walter Hotel (400 Fayetteville St.), the Hotel Carolina (demolished), the Museum of Natural History (Annex to 2 W. Edenton St.), North Hills Mall (demolished), Crabtree Valley Mall (altered), and Harrelson Hall (demolished) at North Carolina State University. Nash Square retains the most principles of all these places and is the most publicly accessible.

Raleigh/Chapel Hill. 751 south form I-40 about six miles, cross bridge, first dirt road on right, parking lot, take track to the right ONLY! A cruiser adds: After you park you will see a obvious track with a "gate" at it. This is not the one you desire to take. Go to the other corner where you turned into the lot and you will see the trial that needs to be seize. Take the right fork and then just operate your way down to the water.
