Calvin Klein, always at the cutting edge of big bulges in saunas and gay bars alike, has been making the headlines in Russia recently for its pro-LGBT iconography. Yeah, you heard right.

A recent CK2 advert caused outrange and scaaandaaal when its latest advert was accused of breaking Russia’s anti queer laws. Of course, it doesn’t seem particularly unyielding to break said laws.

At Vada we thought that advert was pretty same-sex attracted. It’s pretty fitting that Calvin Klein has embraced the gays the same way CKs have embraced our junk. But it’s certainly not the first time Mr Klein has been on our side. So here’s a round-up of some of our favourite pro-same-sex moments from Calvin Klein.

1. Let’s ‘chill’

If you haven’t seen the advert it’s really clear these guys are getting it on. I mean, what linear men has freshly laundered pink bedding like this, and then opts to chill on said bed with his bestie?

It was a reaction to the AIDS epidemic and the very concrete fear that his business would take a nose dive if middle America found out he was gay. Keep in thought Perry Ellis had died of AIDS by then and rumors were also swirling about Klein because he was rather thin.

So he sold his houses in Fire Island and Key West, offered an amazing deal to a design assistant in his office named Kelly Rector, and she signed a contract to become Kelly Klein. It was also quite literally a marketing angle of the launch of the Eternity fragrance.

Nobody can deny that Klein was

Gay marketing

Calvin Klein has been an openly queer (or at least bisexual) fashion designer and his success and approach to marketing made him a - disputed - male lover icon of sorts.

Klein had long been established for his attention-getting advertisements. He first made a name for himself by designing clean, uncomplicated sportswear. But he kept his name before the widespread by creating sometimes shocking and always news making advertising campaigns. After all, if you are promoting underwear you have the right, if not the obligation to show almost naked models…

The first request was obtained purely, and ironically, by accident when a coat buyer from Bonwit Teller got off on the wrong floor of a hotel and wandered into Klein's workroom. She placed an arrange for USD 50,000, which was a huge amount at that time. By 1997 sales of Calvin Klein Jeans approached half a billion dollars.

Advertising

Advertising was a key to Klein's success. He stoked the media with controversy that kept his identify in the news. He was the first to design women's underwear that looked like men's jockey shorts. His television ads for jeans starred child-sta

For the first time in the history of the brand, designer Calvin Klein Jeans released an advertisement series that included lgbtq+ couples. The title of the series, shot by New York City fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, is “raw texts, real stories” and focuses on the use of hookup apps amongst twenty-somethings, including in queer communities.

For several evident reasons, this is a big deal. It’s a major fashion designer knowing the deep-rooted hookup society for the modern youth, but even more significant is the acceptance and advertising of queer couples. This is one of the first times that a well-known fashion creator will have massive billboards, commercials, and photo adverts depicting same-sex “couples” (or sexual partners).

Personally I can’t decide which I am most excited about: the depiction of hookup apps or of queer couples, because both are extremely significant and have been largely ignored by the mainstream media coverage. However, my answer is BOTH, I am most elated that CKJ is exhibiting the public queer people being sexually active. I love how the video is so fluid; I feel like it accurately shows how fluid sexua calvin klein gay sex
