‘King Richard’ Celebrity Aunjanue Ellis Speaks Her Truth About Being Bisexual: ‘I Am Queer — This Is Who I Am’ (EXCLUSIVE)

On March 24, Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis stepped onto the golden-hued carpet to accept her honors at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards. Emblazoned on the left arm of her red-hot Dolce & Gabbana suit jacket was the word “Queer” spelled out in rhinestones.

But no one on the press line outside the Beverly Wilshire hotel asked Ellis about it. And no one inside the ballroom did either. Maybe they were too focused on her barnburner of a speech accepting one of the afternoon’s honors, but the “King Richard” star has another theory.

“I was thinking, ‘Why didn’t more people pay attention to that?’ And I was like, they probably thought it said ‘Queen,’” she tells Variety over Zoom, bursting into a hearty laugh. “It wasn’t that I was expecting any sort of major reaction or anything fancy that. One of my family members noticed, but nobody else did.”

Alice Walker’s canonical classic The Hue Purple has been revered for decades due to its central queer storyline. One of the decisive parts of the plot is the relationship between Celie and Shug Avery. Throughout adaptations of the book such as Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film, this queerness has often been watered down. 

When it was announced that The Dye Purple would be getting a film adaptation of the Broadway musical, LGBTQIA audiences held their breath in anticipation that the sapphic storyline was finally going to get the justice it deserved. 

LGBTQIA legend Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who famously came out by wearing a dress that said “Queer” on the sleeve at an Essence magazine launch, has recently spoken out about the unused film’s depiction of queerness in an interview with Buzzfeed. Aunjanue plays the role of Mama in the 2023 adaptation by Blitz Bazawule.

Aunjanue Ellis has been open about her sexuality for decades, but when asked why her personal life has rarely been in the media, the 53-year-old actress pointed out that "nobody asked." 

In a candid interview with Variety, the King Richard actress recalled walking down the red carpet at the Essence Jet Women in Hollywood Awards in March with the synonyms "Queer" emblazoned on the left arm of her red-hot Dolce & Gabbana suit jacket. But nobody on the press line or inside the event ever asked her about it.

The King Richard actress, 53, speaking with Variety in a piece published Wednesday, said that she previously hadn't spoken about her sexuality, as 'nobody asked.'

The Oscar-nominated star opened up about how there were presumptions made about her: 'Is it because I'm a Black woman from Mississippi? Is it because I'm older?
