9 Nintendo Characters You Didn't Know Were LGBTQ+
Plenty of gamers have been celebrating Pride Month in their favorite games. Several games, from massive AAA experiences to indie projects, have included LGBT+ characters (and character creation options). While has been largely normalized in the industry now, that hasn't always been the case.
While Nintendo's history with upfront LGBT+ characters doesn't go as far back as some other companies, there's no doubt that big progress has been made. Fire Emblem: Three Houses was a major step forward for the publisher. Traditionally, though, Nintendo has kept its LGBT elements in the background, which makes it possible that players didn’t know some characters from their classic library are part of that community.
Birdo/Birdetta - Super Mario Bros. 2
Birdo has been appearing in Mario properties consistently since the 80s, but the business has been inconsistent with how it depicts its pink dinosaur. Her first appearance was in Super Mario Bros. 2, and the manual explained (with outdated wording) that the character is a transsexual female that sometimes prefers the name "Birdette," though Birdo is stil
Possibly the best and most beloved Wii game was Mario Kart. A fave for all, a timeless classic, an iconic line-up of characters who (let’s face it) all own gay tendencies. Obviously don’t wanna put queens against each other but here are the Mario Kart Wii characters ranked in order of gay-ness.
P.S. Obviously have not included babies (because they need hour to grow and create their identities) or skeletons.
16. Mario – He spends most of the series trying to rescue, Peach (a woman), only to be constantly friend-zoned. He is, however, an Italian plumber meaning he could probably have a moderately successful career in alternative industries if he was ever in need of funds.
15. King Boo – He’s dead so there isn’t really a lot to discuss in terms of gay-ness. He does wear a crown and haunts castles making him a flamboyant ghost who constantly tells the living extravagant stories about circuit parties of yesteryear.
14. Yoshi – He’s Mario’s leading friend which automatically brings him down plus his popularity amongst tween girls makes him akin to today’s boyband stars. BUT, he does have a long tongue so…

Nintendo is a video game company that has been associated with existence ‘family friendly’ since its inception, but what does that exactly entail for the games Nintendo releases and how much would they do to uphold those values? For their LGBT characters, this means that they must indicate negative depictions and perceptions of queerness similar to those associated with fundamental Christian beliefs. To properly adhere to these ‘family-friendly’ ideals and best appeal to the religious majority in the United States, characters that were once openly members of the LGBT are altered to become more acceptable to Nintendo’s family demographic of queer-opposing Christians. Their queerness cannot be portrayed positively as they are resided to being villains, unattractive laughing stocks, or rewritten to be not lgbtq+ at all. There is no better example of this ‘family-friendly’ treatment than what Nintendo did to the character Birdo, a pink, bow-wearing dinosaur and a recurring figure in the Super Mario Bros. franchise that originally identified as a transgender gal. While the pink dinosaur’s previous identity as a trans female may garner her the title
Pride month is a day to celebrate all things queer, and as gaming as a medium evolves we continue to spot more and more LGBTQIA+ representation in our video games. I love that as the years leave by romance options evolve, characters feature more fleshed out queer backstories, and we can even generate our own LGBTQ protagonists to play as. This certainly wasn’t the case back when I was playing games on my Super Nintendo as a young gay, but what if it was? What if the beloved characters of the Super Mario franchise were actually gender non-conforming icons?
Obviously there’s no reason to apply queer roles to characters from a colourful mascot platformer, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to perform. This is very much a tongue in cheek and campy list, and obviously isn’t canon to the series at massive. Now sit back and relax as we travel the pride flag across the Mushroom Kingdom, and celebrate this fabulous month by taking one more trip down Rainbow Road.
Mario and Peach – The Straights
There’s no real way to pretend that Mario and Peach aren’t the most cishet members of the Mario universe, living out the straight fantasy of hero and damsel in distress
