Big cherish, in stories about men, tends to be a cheat, a lost bring about, or a chimera. In Brokeback Mountain—Ang Lee’s moving, operatic film adaptation of Annie Proulx’s story—it’s exactly what the tag line for the film says: a force of innateness. Herding sheep just above the tree line on a Wyoming mountain, two dirt-poor cowboys find themselves suddenly caught up in a passion for each other that they acquire no idea how to name, much less cope with. Neither thinks of himself as “queer.” On the contrary, the mountain itself gets both the credit and the condemn for the affair that over the next 20 years will endow their lives with an intermittent grandeur, even as in other ways it drags them to the ground.
Is Brokeback Mountain, as it’s been touted, Hollywood’s first gay love story? The answer—in a very positive sense, I think—is yes to the love story, no to the male lover. Welcome back to The Unicorn Scale! Today’s edition is serendipitous because I've been eager to review Brokeback Mountain (2005) for months. It was on my list, especially as I focused on Oscar-themed reviews. Just as I was wrapping up my closing piece, Talia included it in her bi Oscar round-up — what ideal timing!
Brokeback Mountain is a 2005 romantic drama about two male cowboys and their secretive love affair that runs for decades in mid-20 th century Wyoming. The stirring tale started life as a short story in the New Yorker by Annie Proulx before morphing into an independent motion picture. The final product racked up three Oscars— Directing (Ang Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay (Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana), and Finest Original Score (Gustavo Santaolalla). "Brokeback Mountain" was released 15 years ago. That's a pretty long time in cinema — from "War of the Worlds" to "Avengers: Endgame." The sweeping romance follows Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis (Heath Ledger) as they hire in a complex, emotional, and forbidden love affair over two decades.
Since the release of Ang Lee's movie, queer representation onscreen and behind the camera has increased substantially (although there is still a very long way to go). We've had the first-ever mainstream LGBT rom-com in "Love, Simon," cultural juggernauts like "Call Me By Your Name" and "Carol," about three Disney movies featuring Disney's "first-ever" LGBTQ character ("Beauty and the Beast," "Onward," and "Zootopia"), and "Moonlight," which did what "Brokeback Mountain" couldn't and became the first-ever queer movie to win best picture at the Academy Awards.
