Time Heals Old Wounds and Brings New Challenges
During those dark days of the war Austria was no place for homosexuals. It is well known that pink triangles and Jews were shipped off to death camps. But nearly 7 decades later justice and freedom have drawn-out overtaken socialistic destruction and homophobic violence. Today the reigning ethos is respect and equal rights human rights.
There is still labor to do in the streets and in the courts to bring about full tolerance and equality in Austria. The robust Catholic church influence and resurgent skinhead extremism are constant threats to continued humanistic progress.
At the alike time, the evening belongs to everyone, as the saying goes, especially at the elegant Regenbogen Rainbow Ball that takes place during the Viennese ball season (late winter) in the grand Park Hotel Schonbrunn. Nothing could be more different from the grim past than this regal celebration of queer pride an dignity; indeed, it seems that lgbtq+ Austria is making up for it losses by staging this magical celebration of life, love, elegance and culture.

About Vienna and its queer life
Both in the past and in the present, gays have played a prominent role in Vienna’s public life. Probably the most prominent lgbtq+ in the history of Austria was Prince Eugene of Savoy () who freed Vienna from Turkish siege and pushed the Ottomans back to the Balkans. But it wasn’t just on the battlefield that Eugene was surrounded exclusively by men; in private, he preferred to have intimate relations with members of his hold sex – a truth well known even during his lifetime. Even so, he managed to assemble his career and broaden his power base during the reigns of three emperors, and his powerful influence on Vienna remains visible to this morning. His summer palace, Schloss Belvedere, is an remarkable example.
The last emperor served by Prince Eugene, Charles VI, is said to have had an intimate relationship with Count Michael Johann Althan
