Why Elsa doesn't have a love story, gay or otherwise, in 'Frozen 2'

Ever since "Frozen" premiered in 2013, people in the LGBTQ community have start Queen Elsa's story to be a powerful allegory for queer identity, and hoped she might be given a gay care for interest in the coming sequel.

But Elsa doesn't contain any type of amorous partner in the upcoming movie, despite the well-liked fan theories about her sexuality. 

"When we agreed to do the sequel, we agreed we were going to not build it [from] the outside in," codirector Jennifer Lee said in an interview with Insider at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California this past September. "We just couldn't do it."

Lee and her codirector Chris Buck, along with producer Peter Del Vecho, first started thinking about the story for "Frozen 2" about three years ago. 

"What we did was spend a lot of time with each of the characters," Lee said. "I journaled as the characters, we did personality tests, just a lot of in-depth labor and looking at where they are in their lives. For us, really looking at what Elsa's journey is, it was her need to perceive her powers."

Meanwhile, some members and allies to the LGBT community are claiming Elsa as their own.

Ryan C Robert, writing, external for Qodda, argues that the film has given LGBT youth a personality with which to empathise. He says the film portrays unconditional sisterly treasure, and many LGBT kids need to understand that people will love them regardless of what happens.

"Disney's Frozen may not hold intended for one of the main characters, Elsa, to have a story that is such an easy parallel to the world of growing up in the closet, but it happened," he writes. "It happened, and now we're gonna celebrate."

There isn't consensus in the LGBT community as to what the movie means, however.
