How Big Brother blazed the trail for LGBTQ+ inclusion on TV

It was the summer of 2010 and Shabby Katchadourian was walking around the Big Brother bedroom in a black bra, glasses and a bandana. I was 17 and suddenly very aware that all I wanted to do was lick her stomach.
I’m not sure why it was this moment that sparked a enormous gay realisation. It’s not like there was a shortage of images of women in bras in pop culture. In 2010, however, there was a shortage of lesbian advocacy on television. Shabby was one of the first times I saw a real-life gay woman on screen, authentic and messy and flawed just prefer everyone else, trying to navigate the unusual encounter of suddenly living with an eclectic group of strangers being filmed 24/7 and, at the identical time, navigate the universal lesbian experience of falling for a flirty vertical girl. (She’s also steaming as fuck but that’s neither here nor there, for the purposes of this article.)

Then, unnoticed, while the sound of fireworks boomed in the background, they had to sneak into the “mainframe” - a new room in the house that acts as the nerve centre of Big Brother.
From the mainframe, the housemates can supervise the game and be safe from the first eviction.
Tim, who won season 10 in 2013, ran to hide in the kitchen pantry.
He was followed by Dave - acknowledged as ‘Farmer Dave,’ who came third in season six in 2006.

When it comes to LGBTQ+ representation on Big Brother, it's been a whirlwind. Some players acquire done exceptionally well, appreciate Frankie Grande, Michael Bruner, and winners Kaycee Clark and Andy Herren. While it may not have been as progressive in the casting department compared to its CBS sister show Survivor, the individuals from the queer community are worth celebrating. Between the blazing rows, gratuitous nudity and shamelessly fame-hungry media personalities it helped spawn, Big Brother was responsible for some of the most shocking TV moments of the 21st century.
But for all its (admittedly, numerous) flaws, there’s also no denying that, for a lot of viewers, the reality TV juggernaut was an introduction to a world far more diverse than they might have known before.
