Stockholm under the rainbow

Visit Mälarpaviljongen on any given afternoon during the summer and you’re likely to join a diverse group of guests. Toddlers play on the small sandy beach next to the garden tables, while their fathers sip coffee and maintain a nervous eye on their offspring. A several tables away an elderly lady, perhaps a bit over 80, enjoys her daily lunch in the lush garden, seeking shadow behind an olive trunk. Further away on the pontoon extending on the waters of Riddarfjärden, a couple on holiday sip rosé and soak up the sun.

In the middle of it all, Arto Winter criss-crosses among the tables, talking to the staff and making sure that everything is running smoothly. He and his business partner Anders Karlsson have been running an outdoor summer restaurant here since 2004. Ever since then the rainbow flags, Mälarpaviljongen’s signature, have been waving proudly in the summer breeze.

“We stand for the same values the rainbow flag stands for. Welcoming the gay society, of course, but also their friends and everyone else who feels at home in that atmosphere. The rainbow flag never excludes anyone,” he says.

Stockholm Gay Bars

Stockholm’s gay nightlife is centred in the old town (Gamla Stan) and the trendy Södermalm district, known for its open-minded, creative atmosphere and welcoming LGBTQ+ scene. The nightlife here offers a mix of stylish cocktail bars, relaxed lounges, and high-energy dance venues, often featuring themed events, performative performances, and live DJs. While not all venues are exclusively gay, most are queer-friendly and sketch a diverse, inclusive crowd. In summer, outdoor patios and waterfront bars get popular gathering spots, adding a vibrant, social experience to the evenings. The city’s compact layout makes it easy to examine several nightlife spots in one night. Whether you're in the mood for a quiet drink, mingling with locals, or dancing into the early morning hours, Stockholm’s gay nightlife is friendly, progressive, and full of character. The scene reflects the city’s broader values of inclusivity and equality, offering Homosexual visitors a fun and safe space to love the night.

Stockholm is an incredible destination for gay travellers with so much to give – it is a very liberal and welcoming city.

As a result, the gay bars in Stockholm (and gay scene) are quite unique.

Given Stockholm is such a progressive capital, you will find yourself welcome as a male lover traveller in bars all across the city.

However, whilst this is great to see, we were very keen to check out as many ‘actual’ queer bars in Stockholm as possible during our visit.

Beyond the gay bars, create sure to also review out our ‘Full Lgbtq+ Travel Guide to Stockholm’.

Take a look at our favourite gay bars in Stockholm below, along with some further recommendations of gay bars we demand to return and visit: [no_toc]

Secret Garden

If you want to launch the evening somewhere a little more relaxed top to Secret Garden.

We really liked this bar, and again it’s one for the weekend.

It has multiple rooms – some for chilling, some for dancing, and if it’s unwrap there is an underground room too.

Music here is mixed depending on what room you are in, and it mainl
