I always say that you can find someone lgbtq+ connected to virtually any major historical event. The American Revolution is no exception — and, in fact, without this person being queer, we would almost certainly have clueless the war.
Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was born in Magdeburg in the kingdom Prussia on September 17, 1730. His father was the Royal Prussian Engineer Captain Baron Wilhelm von Steuben and his wife Elizabeth von Jagdovin. In his childhood, his father went into the service of Empress Anna of Russia, and young von Steuben traveled with his father to his various posts. They returned to Prussia in 1740, where von Steuben began to a formal military teaching, taught to him by Jesuits. This education — despite being from a Roman Catholic order — left him extremely critical of the Roman Catholic church. This was probably partly because his parents were devout Protestants.
Although it’s said he participated in one of his father’s campaigns when he was 14 (in the War of Austrian Succession) Von Steuben did not formally join the Prussian military until he was 17. He served as a second lieutenant in the Seven Years War,
“We grew up back in the ’70s and ’80s, where you had homosexual bars everywhere,” says Ted Richard, whose oral history was recorded as part of UL Lafayette’s Queering the Collection project. “I mean, everywhere. At one point, Lafayette had seven gay bars.”
Richard recalls going to Fantasy, which was located behind Mel’s Diner on Johnston Street, and then having breakfast with friends at Mel’s after. Strokes was a lock shaped like a dome behind Bayou Shadows apartment complex. Frank’s on the corner of Taft and Jefferson was everyone’s favorite bar. “You ended up at Frank’s sometime during the night,” he says. Leaping Lena’s hosted the after-crowd on the Evangeline Thruway and could continue open until 6 a.m. since it was outside the city limits.
“We were out and proud support then,” says Richard. Lafayette was known as a gay-friendly town. “The queer community was very vibrant then. We didn’t possess cell phones, so we still went to the bar to meet everybody.”
Archivists are collecting memories enjoy Richard’s in two local collections. Queering the Collection is an effort by UL Lafayette Special Collections to document the history of queer culture in Southwest Louisiana. The

Back to Top of ListEmoni Harbor attended a yoga class on a whim years ago and fell in love with the practice. She moved to New Orleans during the pandemic to discover her ideal yoga collective and couldn't help but notice the lack of diversity. The move advocate to Lafayette changed Harbor's life for the improved. Instead of searching for the community she craved, she created it herself in her own studio.
She started Zen Den with a friend in soon 2021, but they ultimately disbanded, leaving Harbor as the sole owner.
"I wanted to bring more minorities into the studio and teach more authentic yoga principles," Harbor said. "A lot of higher-ups didn't think I could execute it as a 26-year-old Black woman, and there were a lot of doubts. I just kept pivoting until I could prove them wrong, and here I am three and half years later, better than ever."
Harbor has been out since steep school and feels cozy with her sexuality. At Zen Den, Harbor fosters an inviting environment by encouraging attendees and staff to be their truest selves.
