Stances of Faiths on LGBTQ+ Issues: Southern Baptist Convention
BACKGROUND
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) traces its history to when it broke off from Northern Baptists over slavery. The roots of Southern Baptist history go back to the Baptist churches established in the American colonies in the 17th century.
By , the SBC formed its own Sunday Educational facility Board, headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Providing standard literature for all Southern Baptist churches had a mighty unifying effect, solidifying the Southern Baptist Convention as a denomination.
Among doctrines Southern Baptists emphasize is the doctrine of local church autonomy. Working through 1, local associations and 42 state conventions, Southern Baptists share a common bond of basic Biblical views and a commitment to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the entire world.

Growing Up Southern And Gay
In the south, we own a saying, “we dont hide crazy, we celebration it out on the front porch and donate it a sweet tea.” It is an engaging turn of phrase that most people dont comprehend. The basics of it mean that whatever makes us different isn’t something you hideaway in the dark recesses. Instead, deliver it out for all to see and recognize. But it also has a second meaning, one that refers to the fact that even the oddest parts of our families are still, just that… family.
But that is not the case with all the crazies…
Perception of being Southern and gay
There are plenty of television shows and movies that show how southern belles cannot go one unattached place without their homosexual besties, giving them both beauty and fashion tip. Those queer men dressed to the nines and held in high regard, in many circles.
The south, however, is a very class-ridden society that places more importance on social status than anything else.
Those less than fortunate circles arent as lucky. Religion becomes a more dominant mindset and forces many queer folx to retreat to a life of being in the closet. A brutally, classist tradition that hasnt changed m
LGBT people in the South continue to face obstacles at higher rates than the rest of the country. Yet LGBT Southerners are resilient and persist to thrive.

Consider this:
- Across the board, people in the South showed more discomfort with LGBT people than those in the U.S. overall. Many of the responses demonstrated discomfort levels at 5 to 6 points higher in the South than in the country as a whole.
- 40% of respondents in the South listed discomfort with attending a homosexual couple's wedding. It jumped to 50% discomfort when bringing a child to the same wedding.
- Levels of discomfort concerning issues connected to transgender people were highest, both in the South and with the general U.S. population.
Nondiscrimination:
There are no statewide protections for employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. However, several local governments across the south have enacted nondiscrimination ordinances. Check out a few
