With every episode of King of the Hill dropping on Hulu, returning to streaming since being dropped from Netflix many years ago, I wanted to originate doing some more regular explorations of what made this show so great. Based on a topic suggested by Bird MILF, and some great content in my last write-up through the comments, I wanted to delve into Hank and Bobby’s relationship.
Daddy issues are nothing unused to TV. Fractured relationships between fathers and sons were an established trope long before the advent of television, existing in literature since the first stage of the written pos. One of the finest on-screen father-son relationships is between Hank and Bobby Hill on Fox’s 1997 animated sitcom King of the Hill, a association that was, at times, awkward to say the least. At others, it was sweet and sincerely sentimental, an exploration of two extremes coming together and, more often than not, finding common land instead of contention.
Hank, the paterfamilias of the Hill family, is an idealized exaggeration of conservative America. Like everyone else, he’s an emotional person, filled to the brim with pride—for his family, for his country—but he often has
The Boy Ain’t Right: Subversive Gender Roles in King of the Hill
I own a Netflix weakness. I have this strange ability to consume entire seasons and even full series within a few days (insomnia has its perks). My most recent obsession, King of the Hill, has resulted in my adoration for one traits in particular, Bobby Hill. The show itself focuses on the Hill family of Arlen, Texas, led by the straightforward propane patriarch, Hank Hill. King of the Hill approaches common situations encountered by the average individual and handles them in a comedic manner. Mike Decide, one of the show’s creators, based some of his characters around people he had known while living in Texas.
Residing with Hank in the Hill household are Hank’s wife, Peggy, their teenage son Bobby, and occasionally Bobby’s maternal cousin Luanne Platter. Bobby, much to his father’s displeasure, aspires to be a famous prop comic and is often the victim of bullying due to his passive nature. Many episodes in King of the Hill are centered on Hank and Bobby’s somewhat strained relationship, filled with misunderstanding. Hank’s perception of masculinity often interferes with any attempts to understa

what she said, but it'sclear now that Bobby is not gay, just kinda...innocent, it's funny that in the end, Hank's fears of Bobby's homosexuality, and Bobby's "not right" actions were/are a direct result of Hank's parenting methods

Or perhaps its a result of how Hank himself was parented. That is to say, his own fears and biases aside, he worried himself twice over with concern about how Cotton would rip him, for having a queer son.
Cotton : Dammit! I failed you entirely, but I still kept you on the right track. That boy was the only good thing you ever made, and you even done that wrong!
Plus, remember, Bobby does jump into every last fad whole-hog, so miscues were bound to occur. Being gay doesn't signify that you'll be over-the-top, but Bobby is exactly that, sexuality aside. If its stamp collecting, he'll eat 100 goldfish to get that upside-down plane one. If its the harpsichord, he'll stay up 3 days in a row watching 'The Addams Family' to study Lurch
